What Open WebUI does
Open WebUI is a self-hosted AI platform, used through the browser, that connects to models served by Ollama or any OpenAI-compatible API, whether local or cloud-hosted. It is extended with Python plugins - Filters, Actions, Pipes, Tools and Skills - and reaches external services through MCP, MCPO and OpenAPI tool servers.
Why teams reach for it: Open WebUI puts the chat client itself on infrastructure you run - self-hosted, able to run entirely offline, and pointed at Ollama or any OpenAI-compatible API - and it keeps MCP centralised: only administrators can register MCP servers, and they scope each one to particular users or groups with access control.

Which host will connect to the server?
A client, or agent host, is the application — like Claude or Cursor — that actually connects to and uses an MCP server.
