What mcp-agent does
mcp-agent is a framework for building AI agents from capabilities exposed by Model Context Protocol servers, handling the mechanics of connecting to servers, working with LLMs, handling external signals such as human input, and persisting state via durable execution. Applications built with it can themselves be exposed as MCP servers.
Why teams reach for it: mcp-agent manages the lifecycle of MCP server connections for you and implements the patterns from Anthropic's Building Effective Agents - router, orchestrator, evaluator-optimizer, map-reduce - as composable pieces, and the same agent code scales onto Temporal as a durable runtime, gaining pause, resume and recovery without API changes.

What will you use to implement the protocol?
A framework or SDK gives developers pre-built code for creating an MCP server or client, so they don't have to implement the protocol from scratch.
